Jasper decided he didn't need to bother whispering to Rose and just explained, 'They want to take Alice, Bella, Nessie and Edward to Volterra to join the guard. We are obviously refusing and have asked them to leave.' He spoke the words matter of factly and was staring at Jane as he said them. He refused to take his eyes off her incase she sprang for attack, Aro had only Jane as protection and he knew it was unlikely they would fight so outnumbered.

Edward smirked at Rose's remark, he knew Aro would not like the idea of begging. His calm politeness was wearing off and they must have realised it was time for them to leave. Edward could feel Aro's continuing arogance and desire to acquire his positions but he could also sense an unsettled thought at the idea of being outnumbered. Aro hadn't come for a fight just yet but Edward felt he would not be displeased at the idea if that resulted in him getting him Alice and Bella. 'As I said, Aro and Jane are just on there way as we have some pressing matters to attend. If we have some spare time in the next few centuries we will visit you next.' Edward listened to Aro to confirm he understood his meaning, don't come back.

Alice ran home as fast as she could. Visions were popping in and out of her mind, like movie flashes. Each one worse than the other, she burst through the front door of their house, and skidded to a stop at Jasper's side. She kept her eyes steady and her jaw set as she took in Aro and Jane. There weren't going to be any fights today, but there was no way in hell they were taking Edward, Bella, Jazz and Nessie with them today. She didn't care much about herself, as long as they kept Jasper and her family out of it.

Jasper was relieved to see Alice and his breathe came out almost audible as he reached down and automatically placed his hand in hers. He stared into her eyes for one long moment before turning back to the scene in front of him. Although no words were said he knew Alice would understand he was trying to convey the anger and tension in the room, he was concerned that the volturi had turned up unanounced and that they were being so persistent. He'd hoped they would wait longer before Aro tried to recruit his family.
